Cubs' Guzman to have shoulder surgery

Baseball Betting Lines

03/18/2010 - Mesa, AZ (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Cubs reliever Angel Guzman has decided to have surgery to repair the ligament tear in his right shoulder and will be out indefinitely.

The tear was discovered in an MRI exam on March 5th and the right-hander had been hoping to avoid a procedure with rehabilitation. But Guzman met with noted orthopedic surgeon James Andrews Monday and surgery was recommended, then scheduled for next Tuesday. Andrews previously has worked on Guzman's shoulder and elbow.

Guzman was still recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery when the shoulder discomfort popped up this spring, and without him having thrown off a mound yet.

The 28-year-old Venezuelan appeared in a career-high 55 games last season as a vital late-inning cog in the Cubs' bullpen. The right-hander was 3-3 and posted a 2.95 earned run average over 61 innings with 47 strikeouts against 23 walks. He was shut down in late September with soreness in the area of his right armpit.

Guzman is 3-10 lifetime with a 4.82 ERA over parts of four seasons with Chicago totaling 88 games (14 starts).
