02/18/2009 - Winston-Salem, NC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - James Johnson posted 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead eighth-ranked Wake Forest past Georgia Tech, 87-69, at the Joel Coliseum.
With the victory, Wake Forest recorded the program's 1,400th all-time win. In their 103rd season of basketball, the Demon Deacons hold a record of 1,400-1,057.
Jeff Teague added 15 points for the Demon Deacons (20-4, 7-4 ACC), who improved to 12-1 on their home floor this season. Al-Farouq Aminu ended with 14 points and six boards. Ishmael Smith finished with 11 points and eight assists.
Smith became the seventh member of Wake's 400 assists club. Smith now has 403 career assists.
Georgia Tech (10-15, 1-11) was paced by Lewis Clinch, who had 24 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Iman Shumpert ended with 14 points for the Yellow Jackets, who failed to sweep the season series after they upset Wake Forest by a 76-74 final on January 31. Gani Lawal had 13 points and eight assists.
The Yellow Jackets have lost their past five games and 10 of 11.
After Johnson extended Wake Forest's lead to 61-47 early in the final half, the Yellow Jackets responded with nine consecutive points to cut the gap to five. Alade Aminu capped off the spurt with a jumper with about 13 1/2 minutes to play.
Ahead 63-58, the Demon Deacons essentially sealed the victory by going on a 14-2 spurt. Smith made a layup with just over nine minutes remaining to culminate the run. Johnson made three layups during the spurt.
The Yellow Jackets never got closer than 16 points the remainder of the way.
The Demon Deacons wasted no time in taking control of this ACC clash. Just 10 minutes into the game, Wake Forest held onto a commanding 29-10 lead. Johnson tallied 12 points during the run, which was capped off with a Smith layup.
Wake Forest extended the margin to 48-28 with just over 3 1/2 minutes left in the frame. But Georgia Tech finished the half on a 11-2 run to cut the Demon Deacons gap to 50-39 at halftime. Johnson had 16 points in the initial 20 minutes.

Wake Forest hit 57.4 percent of its shots from the field, compared to 40.6 percent for Georgia Tech...The Demon Deacons own a 35-32 edge in the series.
